Candles! We all love them, but do you know the correct way to look after them so that they reach their full potential? We’ve put together some quick tips on how to take care of your candles to keep them looking and smelling great!
- The First (And Most Important) Light…
Before you light your candle for the first time, trim your wick to about 1/8” above the surface of the wax to give the wax time to burn to the edges. Let your candle burn until the wax melts to the edge of the glass and you’re left with about half a cm of melted wax, this will prevent tunnelling. Candle wax has a memory, so if you don’t burn your wax to the edge the first time, your candle will continue to burn down the tunnel it is started to make. For best results, burn your candle to the edge each time you burn it.
- Trim Your Wick!
Trim your wick every time you burn you candle, again to about 1/8” above the surface of the wax. Trimming your wick before every burn stops your flame getting too big and omitting black soot. When your wick is short, only the wax will burn rather than the wick itself.
What can I use to trim my wick?
You can use regular scissors or you can get your own specialised wick trimmers!
- Keep It Clean
If you do see any black soot on the glass of your candle, wipe it off with a dry towel (if your candle is burning, be very careful). As well as this, if you see any debris in your candle wax, carefully pick it out with some tweezers as the debris can cause excess flames and can become quite dangerous.
- The End is Near
When your candle is reaching its final hours, be sure not to let it burn all the way down, no matter how tempting. Once the wax drops to about half an inch, it’s time to blow out the flame, let it cool and throw the candle away.
Remember to never leave your candles unattended!
